Anchorage International Airport Steps Up As Key Air Cargo Hub

Normally ranked as the fifth busiest cargo airport in the world, the Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport [ANC, PANC] continues to be a pivotal hub for facilitating international cargo operations. With growing demand for air cargo capacity worldwide, operations have recently spiked at the airport, making it the world’s busiest today.

As North America continues to manage the COVID-19 outbreak, the airport is expected to keep playing a key role in supporting cargo flights, especially those coming from Asia where most critical goods and medical supplies are produced.

Maximizing the geographical advantage of Anchorage International Airport

Located at the top of the world, the airport is equidistant from Europe, Asia and North America, which allows air cargo operators operating from ANC to reach 95% of major global markets in less than 10 hours.

Due to this advantageous position, it is estimated that 80% of cargo flights stop over at ANC for refueling, cargo transfer or shift change of aircrew.

Performing technical stops at ANC also generates fuel savings while increasing profitability. Cargo carriers operating to ANC can bring more cargo while consuming less fuel, since they can refuel at the airport before proceeding to their next destination using a shorter route.

Serving 44 cargo destinations, ANC handled more than 41,000 wide- and narrow-body cargo aircraft landings in 2019, with a weekly average of 500 wide-body cargo aircraft landings.

Enhanced operational freedom and future tourism in Anchorage

Aside from its strategic location, ANC offers unique cargo transfer rights to operators, as authorized by the United States Department of Transportation in 2003.

These cargo transfer rights allow cargo operators to facilitate transfers during a technical stop, including cargo transfers between aircraft from the same carrier; transfers from one carrier to another; co-mingling of US and non-US cargo; and change-of-gauge transfers, which refer to a switch of aircraft but use of the same flight number.

In 2018, airport authorities revealed their plan to build an onsite Quick Cargo Center, which will temporarily store shipment brought by cargo carriers but needs to be transported by a different aircraft via a connecting flight. The facility is envisioned to be climate-controlled, fully secure and with easy access to aircraft parking sites for easy cargo haulage.

While being one of the top cargo airports in the world, ANC also manages a substantial number of passenger flights. It serves 21 domestic and international passenger destinations and managed almost 5.7 million passengers and over 42,000 passenger aircraft landings in 2019.

With a stunning skyline, majestic mountain range and beautiful national parks offering a mix of exciting activities, Alaska is a growing tourist destination. As such, passenger flights are expected to pick up at ANC in the near future. Meanwhile, the airport has amplified its sanitation program, including using hospital-grade disinfectants and ultraviolet LED lights to sanitize escalator handrails.

WHO Guidelines: How The Aviation Industry Should Manage COVID-19

The aviation industry remains at the forefront of implementing strategic measures to stop the spread of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19), as air travel plays a key role in both the transmission and prevention of the virus. In light of this, the World Health Organization (WHO) has outlined essential guidelines to standardize the aviation sector’s operational processes in managing COVID-19.

Aviation crew and ground personnel should receive COVID-specific training.

Aviation crew and ground personnel should receive training on how to recognize the signs and symptoms of COVID-19, as well as how to prevent its transmission, such as practicing proper hand hygiene, social distancing and respiratory etiquette (covering the mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing).

The training should also educate personnel on proper use and removal of personal protective equipment and implementation of best practices on environmental cleaning, waste disposal, and management of situations where the personnel comes in contact with individuals exhibiting flu-like symptoms.

Aviation staff based in areas where there are confirmed COVID-19 cases should take extra precautions.

For aviation staff stationed in areas where there are COVID-19 cases, training should include knowledge on reporting, management of ill travelers, and contact tracing.

Additional precautionary measures must be applied to reduce the possibility of infection, such as:

If you develop any of these symptoms during a flight, it is recommended to stop carrying out your duties only when it is safe to do so. Then, inform the crew and follow the steps outlined in WHO’s Global Surveillance for human infection with coronavirus disease.

Be ready to activate WHO-recommended measures for managing suspected cases.

Airline staff and aircraft operators must collaborate with airport health authorities in managing suspected cases and in implementing the airport public health contingency plan. Aside from this scheme, the interim guidance released by WHO for managing ill travelers at ports of entry and the action items in the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) Annex 9 and 14 must be implemented.

Airport health authorities must also coordinate with support service providers so the latter can execute relevant safety procedures. These service providers may include aircraft cleaners, cargo and baggage handlers and waste removal service providers.

Suspected cases on-board an aircraft must be effectively managed to minimize risk of transmission.

In case the cabin crew identifies an ill traveler on-board the aircraft, they should ensure contact with the said traveler and other passengers or cabin crew members is minimized. The pilots and aircrew should then inform their airport of destination about the situation prior to arrival.

The aircrew should guide the ill traveler to disembark according to protocols set by the airport health authority to reduce the risk of transmitting the disease to other passengers, crew members and ground personnel.

Airport staff should be present to assess the condition of the traveler, who will be isolated if he/she meets the definition of a suspected case.

Contact tracing must be done immediately.

As soon as a suspected case has been identified on-board, the aircrew must identify and manage the contacts to prevent further transmission of the disease.

A contact is any individual sitting within two meters of the suspected case; any travel companion or individual providing care to the suspected case; and any cabin crew member who served the suspected case or who had been designated to look after the suspected case.

Once the aircraft arrives at the airport, the suspected case and their contacts will need to undergo health observation. If the suspected case tests positive for COVID-19 after the flight, then all contacts must be quarantined. Other passengers who have not been identified as contacts will be advised to self-monitor for 14 days, and must immediately seek health services and self-isolate if they develop any symptoms.

All aircraft must have universal precaution kits to help manage suspected cases on-board.

The aircraft should have universal precaution kits that can be operated by at least one cabin crew member. The kits should include the following:

Aircraft cleaning and disinfection should be enhanced.

Routine cleaning procedures will suffice if there is no passenger who developed or showed any of the COVID-19 symptoms. However, if there is a passenger who developed or showed any symptom during or immediately after the flight, more stringent cleaning procedures should be applied, including the following:

WHO strongly suggests boosting hygiene services at the airport in compliance with guidelines from the Airport Council International: https://aci.aero/about-aci/priorities/health/documentation/

Private Aviation Experts Still See Robust Growth In 2020

Business aviation industry experts remain optimistic that private flights will increase this year compared to 2019, citing business, relocation and repatriation flights as main factors that will drive growth throughout the year.

With the challenges presented by the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19), private jet travel has become more favorable as it offers increased safety and security by minimizing the exposure of passengers to crowds and the virus in contrast with commercial flights.

In addition, even with stricter travel policies around the world, private flights offer more flexibility and have fewer restrictions, allowing critical business, government and evacuation flights to continue operations.

Private Jet Inquiries & Bookings Increase Amid Outbreak

Private flight inquiries for departures from China increased by more than 150% at the onset of the COVID-19 outbreak, according to Avinode, an online marketplace for private air charter. Italy followed with flight requests doubling compared with the same period in 2019.

Meanwhile, in the United States, charter companies saw up to 10 % increase in demand for private flights for both domestic and international travel. Before the US ban on European travel commenced, data firm WingX observed an over 40% increase on business aviation flights from London compared to the same day in 2019.

Summer Vacations to Boost Private Aviation

According to a market study by Private Jet Card Comparisons, nearly 50% of private fliers with upcoming summer vacations are still keen on traveling, with plans subject to change; 29% have yet to reconsider their summer plans; and 20% intend to have a summer holiday one way or another, even if their travel plans vary.

Private Aviation Will Still Be the Preferred Way of Traveling in Coming Months

In the next three to six months, 46% of private jet travelers plan to use business aviation to relocate family members, while 45% are planning to visit a second home, and another 35 % will still use their private jet access for important business trips.

Around 77% of private fliers have said avoiding exposure to coronavirus will continue to be a big factor in their decision to fly privately in the near future. Although some 39% have canceled their trips, a good 36% have added private flights primarily because of COVID-19.

Although most will use private aviation for business or relocation purposes, some 19% plan to use private flights to go to a hotel or resort, and 13% to fly into luxury rental villas and yachts.

Jetex Reunites Family By Undertaking Near Impossible Mission

Jetex continues to facilitate safe and seamless private flights even in the most challenging times.

We are pleased to share the story of how the Jetex Team has helped a mother to reunite with her daughter amid the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak – a near impossible mission which required overcoming numerous challenges and navigating strict travel regulations that are necessary to prevent the virus from spreading.

Shafiq Derkeshly, Project Manager at Jetex, oversaw the flight operation that helped Frieda, a member of World Vision International, to travel back home to Nairobi, Kenya, shortly after her husband passed away while she was deployed in Angola for work on behalf of the humanitarian aid organization.

Starting 20 March 2020, Angola has closed its borders, effectively halting air, land and sea travel. To facilitate the flight, Jetex engaged diplomatic channels to secure the necessary permits, including liaising with the Ministry of Transport of Angola. He led the Jetex Team to arrange a private jet and spent two sleepless nights to make sure that all required permits were arranged and ready for the repatriation flight.

Jetex has successfully executed the operation with zero profit and all for a good cause. Today, Frieda is with her daughter in the safety of their home, a genuine comfort in this challenging time.

“I would like to express my gratitude for all the efforts you and your team implied to accomplish the almost impossible mission of sending our colleague Frieda back home in Kenya to reunite with her daughter after losing her husband. This was an extremely unusual situation for all of us, but your professionalism and competence certainly played a crucial role. This was truly a remarkable result and I am sure none of us will never forget,” said Maria Carolina, Country Director, World Vision International.

Jetex remains true to its promise of facilitating seamless global connectivity at all times, while ensuring safety and wellbeing of its customers and employees.

World Vision International is the largest child-focused private charity in the world, with approximately 40,000 staff members working in more than 100 countries to make sure children in need can have the opportunity to live life to the fullest, including having access to food, water and education.
